ABCoustic Budapest

Saturday was ‘Vlog Your ABC’ day, so to say. Five second snippets, in one way or another connecting letters that mattered to each person’s take on it. In teams of 3 we ventured into town, Raymond (The Boy King) hooked me up with Sigrid and Joel.

I thought I knew what I was doing from the get go…but, as it is in so many other instances, you change your mind over time. In my case, during filming. Half way, still not sure, I decided I would just continue what I was doing and figure it out while editing. So I ‘taped’ the sights, bicycles, people, details, panoramic views, etc, trying to capture what I wanted to take home from my impressions of Budapest. Both for the assignment and Amsterdamize.

Today it hit me. Going through that footage, I realized my recent pre-VlogEurope / memory lane post had become an important part of the creative process. It was finally clear, Jan’s video about the surprising lack of sounds (noise) on the streets of Amsterdam would be the frame work for my video.

This also enabled me to play it out a little more. Soundtrack? No need. Rhythm section? No bother. It was already right there.

The only guideline of the assignment I couldn’t live up to was the 5 seconds part…these became ten times shorter, lol. Tell me what you think.

1st Vlog Global Flashmeeting - Thanks for making it a success!

Wow. Just wow.

Thanks to all who participated in the 1st ever Vlog Global Flashmeeting this evening. For those of you who could not make it, you can watch the archives by clicking here. We had more than 25 vloggers show up throughout the duration of the flashmeeting, from 4 of the 6 populated continents. People of all shapes, ages and sizes, old faces and new and all with different and equally powerful motivations for making their own media. The message was resoundingly clear: Vloggers continue to rock, have very strong convictions and is one of the most fun communities on the web when we manage to get together.

We do plan on doing this next year, making sure we get more women (we invited the same amount of women as men, but the women were really busy or not replying!), more voices from places like Africa and South America, but that we keep the same shared commitment to making our own media and showing others how to do the same.

We really hope you watch the archive. It’s worth your time.

Update: And special thanks to the infinitely helpful Markus Sandy for all of his scheduling and technical assistance.

Less Than One Month Away!

We’re less than one month away from the 4th edition of Vlog Europe on the 18th and 19th of October, and we would love to have you there!

This year’s meetup takes us to Budapest’s Loft Hostel , where we have 18 beds, great common areas, a huge TV for screenings and a great location in the heart of Budapest! Accomodation this year is free for up to 18 people on a first come, first served basis for the nights of October 17 and 18. At the time of this posting, we have 5 slots left.

Participants will be coming in from all over Europe on every mode of transport imaginable. And thanks to our core sponsor TechSmith, some particpants will be bus-ing and train-ing their way to Budpest and will video the entire trip!

This year, we plan on having a free form, participant-generated schedule. Think of it like a 1960’s “be in”, but less flower power and more Vlog. We’ll be doing everything from screening videos to discussing the newest and best tools available to videomakers, and much more! We’re looking at meeting up with our Vlogger friends all over the globe via Flashmeeting or other means, so please stay tuned for details.

There’s still plenty of time to plan, and we’d love to have you there. Anyone with an interest in web-based video is welcome.

To secure your slot at the hostel, or just let us know that you are coming, please click here and add your name to our wiki. If you have any questions, leave a comment on this post.

We’ll post more news as we have it. We look forward to seeing you in Budapest!

Vlog Europe Update

We let things get a bit quiet over the holiday period, but we’re back and ready to move forward with the blog!

First, we invite you join the Vlog Europe Yahoo! Group (mailing list), in which many conversations surrounding the annual event and general discussion about Videoblogging. For instance, one member let us know that a very promising event, VideoCamp Paris , is in the planning stages.

One thing we’ve been discussing over the past few months on the Vlog Europe Yahoo Group is the how and the where of Vlog Europe event for 2008. We are in the middle of compiling everything that was said, and will be putting forward a proposed plan both on the Yahoo! Group and on this blog within the next couple of weeks. We hope that the past participants and interested future participants will like the ideas we came up with based on your feedback and watching what other people are doing with their events.

Finally, we will begin curating videos here soon, and we think it’s a good idea to start by posting some of the best work we’ve seen from past Vlog Europe participants. If anyone would like a login to post some of these videos or to post about anything related to Vlog Europe, please let us know.

Stay tuned, and make sure you’re subscribed to our feed.
